Administrative: Leap Second Adjustment for NOAA-15, 16, 17, 18, 19, & MetOp-A/2; Issued: June 29, 2012 1600 UTC

Subject: Administrative: Leap Second Adjustment for NOAA-15, 16, 17, 18, 19, & MetOp-A/2; Issued: June 29, 2012 1600 UTC

Topic: Leap Second and End of Year Processing
Date/Time Issued: June 29, 2012 1830 UTC
Satellite(s) Involved: NOAA-15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and MetOp-A/2
Instrument(s) Involved: All
Products) Involved/Affected: All Products/Geolocations
Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation: 30 June 2012, 2359 UTC
Details/Specifics of Change:
The pass that crosses the boundary between June 30 and July 1 will be affected for data from the NOAA-15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 satellites. Recorders will be stopped just before the end of June and new recordings started at the beginning of July. Simply stated, the last pass of June will be split in two parts with the data from June in the first part and the July data in the second part. Also, the addition of a leap second is planned for the end of June and the July data will reflect the leap second update in the timecodes. Further, all clock drift files have been updated. For NOAA-15,
16, 17, 18 and 19 satellites these updates are made on the ground in the pre-product processor. However, forMetOp-A/2 data processing, NOAA uses the spacecraft internal timecodes, which will not be updated to include the leap second until approximately 13:27 UTC on July 1. During this 13+ hour period, a correction will be applied to the MetOp-A/2 data on the ground as part of pre-product processing. However, users should be advised that it is possible that some data will be mislocated as a result of this event.
