NOAA-18, MHS, Warm Calibration Saturation Problem, 23 March 2008 - Issued: 26 March 2008; 1630 UTC

Topic:
Warm calibration saturation problem

Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
26 March 2008, 1630 UTC

Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-18

Instrument(s) Involved:
MHS channel 3 & 4

Product(s) Involved/Affected:
All products; bad calibration and science data

Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
23 March 2008 Time 1757 UTC

Details/Specifics of Change:
On 23 March 2008 at approximately 1757 UTC, an anomaly occurred in the NOAA-18 MHS data resulting in a jump in radiometric values rendering channels 3 and 4 unusable until 0640 UTC on 24 March. Unfortunately, the problem was not flagged during the level 1B processing and several passes were processed with erroneous calibration data due to warm target saturation. The Information Processing Division is updating the NOAA-18 MHS gross filter limits to properly detect similar problems in the future. The NSS.MHSX... and NSS.MHSH... level 1B data impacted by the anomaly began with data from ... D08083.S1806.E1956.B1464143... through ...D08084.S0435.E0630.B1464849...
