Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:
7 May 2007, 1540 UTC

Satellite(s) Involved:
NOAA-15, 16- 17, 18

Instrument(s) Involved:
AVHRR

Product(s) Involved/Affected:
Channels 1, 2, and 3a

Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:
8 May 2007, Time TBD UTC - May VISCAL update and Version III prelaunch update
13 March 2007, Time 1815 UTC - update to use KLM Users' Guide prelaunch visible calibration parameters

Details/Specifics of Change:
This notice is to announce three events.
1.) On 8 May 2007, the normal AVHRR visible channel calibration parameter update will be made operational. Following are the new values:
NOAA-18 AVHRR
Ch_1_lo = 0.05284*count - 2.083, count<501.00
Ch_1_hi = 0.1575*count - 54.18, count>501.00

Ch_2_lo = 0.06160*count - 2.427, count<500.00
Ch_2_hi = 0.1848*count - 64.40, count>500.00

NOAA-17 AVHRR
Ch_1_lo = 0.05548*count - 2.220, count<501.12
Ch_1_hi = 0.1629*count - 56.04, count>501.12

Ch_2_lo = 0.06680*count - 2.623, count<500.73
Ch_2_hi = 0.1988*count - 68.85, count>500.73

Ch_3_lo = 0.03221*count - 1.358, count<501.37
Ch_3_hi = 0.2258*count - 98.57, count>501.37

NOAA-16 AVHRR
Ch_1_lo = 0.05529*count - 2.132, count<498.96
Ch_1_hi = 0.1614*count - 54.85, count>498.96

Ch_2_lo = 0.06006*count - 2.269, count<500.16
Ch_2_hi = 0.1770*count - 60.74, count>500.16

These coefficients are intended to be optimal on May 26, in the middle of the two scheduled updates.

2.) On 8 May 2007, prelaunch visible calibration parameter change to reflect Version III values
At some point the prelaunch visible calibration parameters were inadvertently changed for NOAA-15, 16, 17, and 18. On 13 March they were corrected to the KLM Users' Guide prelaunch values. NOAA's Calibration Oversight Panel decided to update the prelaunch values using a new method of determination so that data for all satellites will be represented using Version 3 coefficients. For detailed information go to
http://www.orbit.nesdis.noaa.gov/smcd/spb/fwu/solar_cal/AVHRR3_Prelaunch_CalCoeff.html
To obtain the new values from this website, click on "Prelaunch Calibration (Version III)" in the list to the left of the text. Please note that the original values were derived by different methods for different satellites: Version 1 was for NOAA-15/16/17; Version 2 for NOAA-18; and Version 3 for METOP-A. Metop-A visible calibration parameters have not been updated since launch.

3.) On 13 March 2007 - Prelaunch visible Calibration update to KLM Users' Guide values
Pre-launch calibration coefficients were changed to correct for an inadvertent mistake. At some unidentified point, the prelaunch values had mistakenly been replaced with current updates after launch for NOAA-15, 16, 17, and 18. On 13 March, around 1815 UTC, the following updates were implemented:
- Monthly visible calibration update for March
- NOAA-16 AMSU-A channel 4 Space view gross filtering limit from 17000 to 32767
- Prelaunch visible calibration parameter updated to values found in the KLM Users' Guide
