DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1650Z August 15, 2019

SMOKE:
Western and Central Canada and the northeastern Pacific...
A large area of light smoke was observed extending southward from the
Arctic across all of Canada west of Hudson Bay and northern Ontario. this
region of smoke was being drawn south just off the Pacific coast by a
sprawling high and also into a low pressure center south of Alaska. More
dense remnant smoke was observed over central British Columbia, central
Alberta, southeastern Alberta/southwestern Saskatchewan, and over southern
Manitoba. Much of the smoke across Canada was moving east. No smoke was
drawn over Alaska due to the issue with GOES-17 that impacted imagery
since 0530Z.

Northern Arizona/Northwestern Nevada...
Light to Moderate smoke was still seen across northern Arizona coming
from a couple fires around the Grand Canyon. Some remnant smoke was
also noted. Smoke was moving different directions near and around the
parent fires.

Southeastern CONUS...
A couple of fires were observed emitting varying density smoke plumes
across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the most dense of which was
in and over west-central Alabama. All the smoke was moving off toward
the southwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.

Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
