DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1610Z September 20, 2020
SMOKE:
Central and Western United States, Central Canada, Northern Atlantic….
Smoke from the wildfires over the western United States continues to
affect a large portion of the United States, Canada and into the north
Atlantic Ocean. The highest density smoke within this area extended from
north central Canada south through the Upper Midwest and Northern, Central
and Southern Plains of the United States and into northeast Mexico.
Another area of high density smoke was near the active wildfires over
central and northern California. Further to the east over the North
Atlantic Ocean, an area of mostly moderate density smoke was well
southeast of Nova Scotia and extended south into portions of the North
Central Atlantic Ocean and then curved northeast to offshore Portugal
and North Africa.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
