DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0240Z October 8, 2020
SMOKE:
United States, Northern Mexico, Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific….
The wildfires over the western United States continue to produce a
tremendous area of smoke that extends over most of the United States,
northern Mexico and into the western Atlantic Ocean. Although most of
the smoke was light density, there were some areas of moderate to high
density smoke within the region. Those being over the Southern Plains
from western Texas into south central Kansas. Another area of moderate to
high density smoke was seen over central Kansas and central Nebraska and
extended back towards the west towards the ongoing wildfires over north
central Colorado and southern Wyoming. The final area of moderate to high
density smoke was seen from the northern Rockies of Wyoming and southwest
Montana and extended west and southwest through southern Idaho, southern
Washington, Oregon, northern Nevada and northern and central California.
DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen over the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and
extending west towards the eastern Caribbean Islands.

SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
