DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1640Z August 13, 2021
SMOKE:
United States and Southern Canada….
Fire activity over much of the Pacific Northwest United States and
British Columbia was producing a very large area of smoke that extended
over most of the United States and southern Canada and into portions
of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Within this large area of smoke,
several areas of moderate to high density smoke were seen with those
being a small area just south of the New England coast and then further
west a much larger area over the central and northern Rockies and the
entire west coast of the United States to southern British Columbia.
The highest density smoke was from the northern Rockies west to the
Pacific northwest and then south to northern California.
DUST:
Caribbean Sea….
An area of Saharan dust was seen over portions of the central Caribbean
Sea extending south towards coastal areas of northern Columbia and
northwest Venezuela.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
