DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z October 2, 2021
SMOKE:
Eastern U.S., Central U.S., Southwestern U.S., Western U.S., Northern
Mexico, Central and Eastern Canada…
A large area of mostly light density smoke, from the wildfires over
the western United States and central Canada, extended from much of
central and eastern Canada south into the eastern United States and
offshore Atlantic Ocean and then further west through the central United
States and then southwest to the southwest United States and northern
Mexico. Within this area of smoke, moderate density smoke was seen over
portions of the Upper Midwest of the United States and then also over
the central Plains states.
Central Canada…
Two large complex fires over eastern central Saskatchewan continued
to produce large amounts of moderate to thick density smoke that was
extending north through northeastern Saskatchewan and northwestern
Manitoba into the southeastern Northwest Territories and southwestern
Nunavut.
California/Pacific…
The two large wildfires over south central California continued to burn
vigorously during the afternoon and evening hours producing a moderate to
high density area of smoke that covers much of south central California
with lighter density smoke extending offshore southern California into
the Pacific.
DUST:
Eastern and Central Atlantic Ocean...
A large area of Saharan dust was seen over the central and eastern
Atlantic Ocean moving west and was just east of the eastern Caribbean
Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
