DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0150Z July 31, 2022

SMOKE:
Northern U.S./Southern Canada...
A large area consisting of predominantly light density smoke extends
from the northwestern U.S. (California, Oregon, Washington) and
southern British Columbia all the way to the east of the Great Lakes,
including the southern half of the southern Canadian provinces (Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario), in addition to the majority of the
northern U.S. states (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota,
northern Iowa, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio). Patches
of medium to heavy dense smoke was observed throughout the provinces,
contributing the large area of light density smoke along with the large
wildfires in the western U.S. In addition a long patch of medium-density
smoke seen extending from North Dakota through parts of the Great Lakes
and Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania.


California...
The McKinney wildfire in northern California produced a massive thick
smoke plume seen progressing north/northeastward into Oregon and eastern
Idaho. Moderate dense smoke from the fire was seen over west parts of
Oregon. Despite cloud cover forming over the fire, denser smoke was
still observable over the source of the fire.

Idaho...
The Moose fire in east-central Idaho was observed produced heavy dense
smoke plumes moving eastward into parts of Montana. Another large wildfire
just south of the Moose fire was seen contributing to the heavy dense
smoke, creating a large patch.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea...
An area of light-to-moderate density Saharan dust extended across the
Tropical Atlantic and over the eastern Caribbean Sea, reaching the island
of Puerto Rico. The dust plume extended several hundred miles further
to the north of the eastern Caribbean islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
