DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z November 4, 2023

SMOKE:

Southeastern U.S...
Numerous fires from seasonal burning were seen across the southeastern
U.S, producing light density smoke plumes. Smoke plumes in the states of
Georgia and Alabama were seen moving east/southeast direction while the
smoke in Mississippi, Louisiana, eastern Texas, Arkansas, and Kentucky
were seen extending north. In addition an area of light to moderate
density smoke was seen extending westward across parts of southern
Louisiana.

Western U.S...
Wildfires in the western U.S were seen producing light to potentially
moderate density smoke plumes in the states of California, Arizona,
and Utah. The smoke plumes from these fires were seen mainly moving
in an eastward direction. In addition smoke analysis was unable to be
conducted in the northwest U.S despite numerous wildfires detected due
to heavy cloud cover and weather conditions.

AEROSOL/BLOWING DUST:
Western Mexico coastline/Pacific Ocean...
Areas of aerosol were seen along and off portions of the west Mexico
coastline and over the Pacific Ocean. This aerosol was believed to be
primarily composed of pollutants from industrial sources in Mexico. Some
blowing dust is likely also present over this region

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
