DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z November 14, 2023

SMOKE:
Mogollon Rim/Rockies…
Some scattered fire activity was noted across the Mogollon Rim and the
Rockies in the New Mexico/Colorado border area. The fires in the eastern
portion of the Mogollon Rim were producing moderate to thick smoke that
was moving north then northeast with new smoke moving northwest later
in the day. Smoke over northern New Mexico and southern Colorado was
mainly moving northeastward

Midwest/Mid-Atlantic…
Scattered smoke plumes were observed from Minnesota to Pennsylvania
and Virginia. Smoke was moving east-southeastward from Minnesota into
Virginia, while smoke across eastern Virginia and Pennsylvania was
moving northeastward. The most dense activity was located across the
Upper Mississippi Valley into the Chicagoland area.

Great Plains…
Scattered smoke production was also observed from Nebraska and Iowa
into Oklahoma and Missouri this afternoon. Smoke from the activity in
Missouri was moving westward, west-northwestward across Oklahoma, and
north from fires in Iowa and Nebraska.

Sacramento Valley/Sierra Nevada…
Widespread fire activity in the Sacramento Valley was observed producing
light to moderate smoke that was moving northwestward from the parent
activity, blanketing much of the northern Sacramento valley. A couple
fires in the Sierra Nevada were also observed producing light to moderate
smoke this afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
