DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0042Z November 30, 2023

SMOKE:
Southeastern United States…
Various smoke plumes were visible creating an area of light density smoke
due to seasonal fire activity scattered primarily scattered across the
southeastern Gulf States today. It is probable that there is at least
some moderate smoke plumes throughout the area but cloud cover precluded
further analysis over the region.

Southwestern Alberta…
Several agricultural burns along with wildfires in Southwestern Alberta
could be seen producing a light to moderate density area of smoke which
moved generally to the southeast as evening approached.

AEROSOL:
Caribbean Region…
Some aerosol was seen throughout the day over portions of the Caribbean
especially between Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula. This aerosol was
believed to be primarily from industrial activity.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
