DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0040Z December 4, 2023

SMOKE:
An area of thin density smoke emanating from a number of oil rigs in
the Bay of Campeche was visible over most of the Bay of Bay of Campeche.

Florida...
Scattered fire activity across southern Florida was observed producing
an area of light density smoke today moving northeast from the parent
fire activity over the Atlantic Ocean.

AEROSOLS/DUST:
Southeastern Mexico/Southern Guatemala/Pacific Ocean south of the southern
coast of Mexico and Guatemala…
A broad area of thin to moderate density aerosols mixed with blowing
dust was present over the Pacific Ocean south of Mexico. The aerosols
were likely attributed to industrial activities in the region while the
dust was due to stronger northerly winds blowing across source regions of
far southeastern Mexico (especially the southeastern part of the state
of Oaxaca). The thickest aerosol/dust mixture moved to the south from
there and over the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

Blowing Dust:
New Mexico/Texas/Oklahoma...
Light blowing dust could be seen originating in the western potion of the
Texas Panhandle. This dust was blowing east through the Texas Panhandle
and reaching southwestern Oklahoma as evening approached.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
