DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z December 10, 2023
SMOKE: Texas/Gulf of Mexico… A fire in the western part of the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge to the east of East Bay in southeastern Texas was producing a long and narrow moderately dense to locally thick smoke plume which spread to the south-southeast and well off the coast over the western Gulf of Mexico. SMOKE/AEROSOL/DUST: Southeastern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific Ocean south of Mexico and Northwestern Central America… A broad patch of generally thin density aerosol was seen over the coastal portions of far southeastern Mexico and Guatemala and offshore from there to the south over some of the eastern Pacific Ocean. This aerosol was believed to be primarily from industrial sources in the region though a small contribution of smoke from nearby seasonal fire activity may also be present. In addition, some blowing dust originating from sources in far southeastern Mexico and southwestern Guatemala may also be contributing to the aerosols moving to the south and over the Gulf of Tehuantepec. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
