DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0004Z November 12, 2024

SMOKE:
South-Central/Easter United States…
Moderate seasonal burning in the south-central U.S. and light seasonal
burning throughout the eastern U.S. was creating an area of some very
light density smoke around the area that was continuing east through
the northeastern U.S. into the coastal Atlantic.

Pacific Northwest U.S./Pacific Southwest Canada
Numerous wildfires and seasonal burns were detected today in the
U.S. Pacific northwest and southwestern Canada. Cloud cover was over
these areas precluded further smoke analysts.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central, Southwestern and Eastern Mexico/Western Gulf of Mexico...
An area of light density smoke/aerosols attributed to scattered fire
activity, volcanic emissions and industrial sources was observed today
along the Central and Southwestern Pacific Coasts of Mexico extending
north through southern/eastern Mexico along the coastal regions of the
Western Gulf of Mexico where additional gas flaring emissions could be
seen originating from oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
