DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0002Z November 17, 2024

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest/South-Central/Southeastern United States...
Although numerous wildfires and seasonal burns were detected throughout
the Pacific Northwest, no significant smoke was observed due in the area
due to heavy cloud cover in the region today. In the South-Central and
Southeastern United States very light agricultural burning was creating
numerous light density smoke plumes were detected in the Gulf States.


AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central-Southern Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Yucatan Peninsula/Texas/Pacific
Ocean...
An area of remnant smoke/aerosols attributed to scattered fire activity
and industrial sources across Mexico and Central/Southern America
was observed over central-southern Texas extending south along eastern
Mexico and parts of the western Gulf Of Mexico, through southern regions,
and into the Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
