DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 3, 2024

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S...
Numerous seasonal and agricultural burning through the southeastern
U.S were observed producing light density smoke plumes. Majority of the
smoke was moving eastward across the regions with the exception of smoke
in southern Alabama and Florida, where the smoke was moving southward
towards the Gulf of Mexico. The majority of the smoke was concentrated
in Mississippi, Florida, and southern Louisiana.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of
Campeche...
An area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols attributed to
scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this morning along
the Southwestern coastline of Mexico into the eastern Pacific Ocean,
Central and Southern Mexico, and parts of the Gulf of Mexico where
additional gas flaring emissions could be seen originating from oil rigs
in the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
