DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z December 12, 2024

SMOKE:

United States:
Although there was high fire activity especially along the Pacific
coast and areas surrounding the Mississippi River, widespread cloud
cover prevented a more detailed analysis.

The only smoke that was highly visible was along the SE border of Texas
and the southern border of Louisiana where various smoke density plumes
were seen emitting towards the Gulf of Mexico.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Southwestern Mexico/Central America/Pacific Ocean...
A large area of light smoke was observed today over southern Mexico and
Central America. The smoke was moving north along the western coast of
Mexico and west into the Pacific Ocean. Cloud cover in the southeast of
Mexico and Central America prevented more detailed analysis.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
