DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z June 19, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Northern US...
Wildfire activity continues over western and central Canada and is now
also observed in Alaska. Light to moderate-density smoke was seen from
northwestern Alaska to Yukon, the Northwest Territories, making its way
south over northern Alberta and moving east over Quebec. Heavy density
smoke was seen mostly over northern BC. Light smoke dipped further south
into northeastern Montana, the Dakotas, and moving eastward towards the
Great Lakes.

Northern Mexico/Texas/New Mexico...
Plumes of predominantly light-density smoke associated with wildfire
activity in southern Utah, southwestern New Mexico, and northern
Mexico were observed covering parts of northern Mexico and the Gulf of
California, as well as central-western Texas, New Mexico, and northeastern
Arizona. Smoke from this area moved towards the NE eventually mixing
with the smoke from Canada.


DUST:
Lesser Antilles...
Saharan Dust was observed moving west over the Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
