DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z July 3, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada/Northern United States/Eastern United States…
An area of mainly light to moderate smoke was observed blanketing an
area encompassing Alaska, much of Canada, much of the eastern and central
CONUS, southern Greenland, Iceland, the UK, and into Europe. This area of
smoke is mainly the result of wildfire activity across central Canada and
Alaska with minor contributions from smaller and more isolated wildfires
across the NW Territory. The thickest smoke was observed across central
Alaska and central Canada including Manitoba and western Ontario. Smoke
is generally moving westward across central Alaska, the Yukon, and NW
Territory around an area of high pressure over northern Alaska and the
Bering Sea while smoke originating from central Canada is being drawn
east then southeast across the Great Lakes and into the northeastern
CONUS and Maritime Provinces. Light remnant smoke was also seen across
much of the eastern CONUS.

Southern California and the near-shore Pacific…
The Madre fire along the southern rim of the Central Valley is producing
thick smoke that is observed extending south and south-southeastward
over the Channel Islands, perhaps with some light to moderate smoke
encroaching on the Los Angeles to San Diego Metro area.

Pacific Northwest…
Fires from northern California into Washington State were observed
producing light to moderate smoke. Smoke was moving southwest from fires
in northern California and east-southeast from fires in the Washington
Cascades and north-northeast from a fire in eastern Washington.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
