DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2350Z July 4, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada…
Fires across central Alaska, northern British Columbia, Saskatchewan,
and Manitoba remain active, continuing to emit thick to moderate
smoke. Compared to the morning, smoke over the central Canadian provinces
has expanded eastward and thickened, with moderate to heavy plumes
more consolidated over Manitoba and Ontario. The Alaskan smoke still
drift west.

Central/Eastern US…
Merged plumes from Canadian and southwestern U.S. sources have
intensified. A broad zone of light to moderate smoke now spans from the
central Plains through the Midwest to the Northeast, with pockets of
heavier smoke in the Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes.

Southwestern US…
The Madre fire in southern California persists. Light smoke continues
eastward over the Rockies, feeding into the central U.S. plume.

Atlantic…
Light smoke still pushes off the East Coast into the Atlantic, showing
continued transport from the continental fires.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
