DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z July 5, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Eastern United States…
Fires across central Alaska and Canadian central Provinces continued to
produce thick to moderate smoke. Thicker smoke in Alaska diverted mostly
west with some moderate drifting east-southeast, merged with thicker
Canadian smoke and continued east. Moderate smoke spread towards the
Atlantic and to the south, where it condensed over the eastern states
and moved offshore into the Atlantic.

Central United States…
Light smoke from fires in Utah spread northeast across Wyoming, and
south over the plains towards western Texas.

Southwestern US…
An area of light to moderate smoke persists over southern California
with moderate to thick smoke produced by the Madre fire. Light smoke
spread south over northern Baja before moving offshore into the Pacific,
and also drifted east towards Nevada and Arizona.

Northern California…
Fires in northwestern California produced a thick to moderate plume of
smoke which spread east over southern Oregon into southeast Idaho.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
