DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z July 8, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Eastern United States/Atlantic Ocean...
Wildfire activity throughout Alaska and northwestern and Central Canada
produced widespread areas of thick and moderate smoke which spread from
the Bering Sea to the Atlantic. Smoke was spreading west from Alaska
but a majority of the larger plumes in the Northwest Territories,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba moved to the east.

Eastern United States/Southern United States…
Light smoke from the fires in Alaska and Canada expanded south over the
eastern United States where light to moderate smoke from agricultural
burns in the southeast added to the spread. Light smoke circulated to
the west, across the southern United States reaching northern Baja and
the Pacific. Smoke also moved east into the Atlantic.

California/Pacific Northwest...
Fires in northern California, southwestern Oregon and Washington State
produced variable plumes of thick to moderate density smoke. Smoke moved
generally to the northwest, thinned and merged with the larger area of
smoke spreading south and east from Alaska and Canada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
