DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1722Z January 23, 2025

SMOKE:
California...
Yesterdays light to heavy density smoke from the ongoing Hughes wildfire
(immediately north of Santa Clarita) was observed drifting Southwest
over the Pacific Ocean. As of this morning the Hughes fire was releasing
a very small amount of light smoke.

Baja California...
Two large wildfires were visible in northwestern Baja California with
one located just southwest of Tijuana releasing light to moderate smoke
and another located just southwest of Ensenada releasing moderate to
heavy smoke. Both smoke plumes were moving southwest of the fires out
over the Pacific Ocean.

Arizona...
Light density smoke was observed emanating from the ongoing Horton
wildfire (Central Arizona). The smoke was observed drifting southwest
and remained in the respective state.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
An area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols attributed to
scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this morning along
Mexico’s Southern Pacific coasts, extending west into the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
