DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0156Z January 29, 2025

SMOKE:
California/Pacific ocean...
Seasonal burning and remnant light smoke from recent wildfires were
observed covering most of western and central California were it pooled
up off the coast of California and Baja California.

Oregon...
Two new fires in western Oregon along the Pacific coastline were
observed releasing mostly light to moderate density smoke that was moving
generally west over the Pacific Ocean before shifting to the south state
as evening approached.

Florida...
moderate seasonal burning was seen through the Florida Panhandle creating
an area of smoke that was observed moving generally south over southern
Florida with at least one fire in the mixture releasing moderate to
thick smoke.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
An area of predominantly light density smoke and aerosols attributed to
scattered agricultural burning, volcanic emissions and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed today along Mexico’s
Central and Southern Pacific Coasts, extending west into Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
