DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE: Oklahoma... Scattered wildfires in central Oklahoma were observed producing light-density smoke drifting northwestward. California... Scattered wildfires in central California were observed producing light-density smoke moving to the southeast and southwest. SMOKE/AEROSOL: Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America/Central America... Smoke from fire activity, aerosol emissions from gas flaring and other industrial activities, as well as remnant smoke from previous days contributed to a widespread layer of light-density smoke/aerosol that was observed extending from the tropical Eastern Pacific to the Gulf Coast and Central America. The thickest smoke was observed across eastern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, and the southwestern Gulf of America. The layer is generally moving from northern Central America into the Yucatan and out over the Gulf of America, roughly paralleling the Gulf Coasts of Mexico and Texas. The full northward extent of this feature is uncertain due to cloud cover. There is also a portion extending from western Mexico west-southwestward out over the Pacific Ocean. Large fires in Jalisco were observed producing moderate and heavy smoke that moved northeast within the state, ultimately merging with the larger light-density smoke plume. YL THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
